A file of correspondence, reports, and press material concerning cultural developments in Romania. The documents include a report produced by the British embassy in Bucharest on cultural developments in Romania over the last two years; and a second report providing an assessment of Romanian culture in March 1965. The documents also cover a general liberalisation of Romanian culture, with greater freedom afforded to Romanian writers; the British belief that, whilst the censorship of non-communist work in Romania has eased significantly, Romanian intellectuals are still unable to interact with the present schools of thought in the West; and the British observation that the Romanian press is still tightly controlled by the Romanian government, with "sterile uniformity" remaining "the order of the day". Other documents discuss an exhibition of abstract art in Bucharest; and a visit to Romania by a French theatre company, which proved very popular with the Romanian public.
