A file of correspondence and reports concerning political developments in communist countries. The documents contain a series of reports produced by the Foreign Office on "trends in communist policy" between January and August 1958, covering the decision of the Soviet government to boycott a conference organised by the United Nations to discuss proposals for international disarmament, "on the grounds that it is weighted against them"; and an attempt by the Soviet Union to organise an alternative international conference to put forward their own plans for disarmament. The reports also discuss the execution of Imre Nagy, the leader of Hungary during the failed 1956 revolution; Nikita Khrushchev's ascension to become the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union; and the drafting of a seven-year economic plan by the Soviet government. Further reports comment on developments in Chinese foreign policy; and relations amongst the Soviet satellite states.
