Northern (N): Soviet Union (NS). Internal Political Situation

1958

A file of correspondence, reports, and images concerning political developments in the Soviet Union. The documents contain a list of members of each branch of the Soviet government; several photographs taken inside Soviet polling stations during the recent national elections; and a report produced by the Foreign Office on the demographics of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, noting that there has been a significant influx of manual workers into the institution. The documents also include a report produced by the British embassy in Moscow covering the ascension of Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, to become the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union; and the surprise of the embassy that Khrushchev did not opt to nominate one of his protégés to the position, to avoid being accused of developing a personality cult. Other documents feature an American report commenting on revisionism in the Soviet Union.
