A file of correspondence and reports on the Polish coal-mining industry. The file contains an account of a conversation between the Commercial Secretary of the British embassy in Warsaw and the Vice-Minister of Coal Mining and Power, in which the latter stated that coal production had increased since 1950 but stagnated in the last three years; and a letter from the British Ministry of Power noting that the Polish government were likely to quote figures which showed their industry in a good light. The file also includes an extract from a speech in which the Polish leader, Władysław Gomułka, announced that coal-miners were on average working thirty-five fewer days per year than in 1954, and that production was on course to meet the requirements of the five-year plan.
