Northern (N): Poland (NP). Foreign Policy

1958

A file of correspondence, reports, and speeches concerning foreign policy developments in Poland. The documents contain a transcript of a speech delivered to the Polish Parliament by Józef Cyrankiewicz, the Polish prime minister, in which he declared that Poland "will not omit any occasion to strengthen peace in Europe"; criticised the West German government for opting to arm its forces with nuclear weapons; and advocated the implementation of the Rapacki Plan, a proposal by the Polish foreign minister for the creation of a zone in Central Europe in which nuclear weapons are banned. The documents also include a report produced by Sir Eric Berthoud, the British ambassador to Poland, covering Cyrankiewicz's speech; and a paper produced by the Foreign Office commenting on "areas in which Polish government policies continue to diverge from those of the Soviet Bloc". Other documents discuss the ratification of several international agreements by the Polish government.
