A file of correspondence concerning an attempted defection from Hungary. The letter discusses the case of Attila Cseh, a Hungarian national who visited the British legation in Budapest to claim a £1000 reward for information regarding the whereabouts of four missing Hungarian students; and the view of the British legation that no such reward exists, but that if it does exist Cseh has a reasonable claim to at least half of it. The documents also cover the possibility of Cseh using the reward to try and escape Hungary, which he appears intent on doing; and the fear of the British legation that if Cseh is caught the Hungarian government will use him as an example of the legation helping a would-be defector. Other documents comment on the view of the Foreign Office that no reward was ever offered, and that Cseh is therefore mistaken.
