A file of correspondence and legal material on Hungarian compensation payments. The Hungarian government had agreed in 1956 to pay £4.05 million in compensation to British citizens whose property in Hungary had been nationalised or otherwise lost during and after the Second World War. The file contains letters from members of the public asking for an early distribution; the Foreign Office's reply that the instalments received so far from Hungary were so small that many claimants would only receive a few shillings; and a Foreign Office letter noting that claims were limited to people who were British citizens at the time their property was lost. The file also discusses the compensation agreements between the United Kingdom and other Eastern European states; and the case of a claimant who had not known about her potential claim against Hungary until after the 1956 agreement was signed, and who was therefore ineligible to claim.
