1958

A file of correspondence concerning the treatment of British diplomats and their staff in Bulgaria. Subjects covered in the file include assaults on members of staff accused of taking sensitive photographs; road traffic incidents involving members of the Bulgarian security forces; and the illegal entry into the homes of British officials. Further correspondence concerns the British notes of protest about the incidents; the advice of the Foreign Office; and the response of the Bulgarian government. The file also covers the difficulties facing other Western diplomats working in Bulgaria, and their failure to instigate a joint protest about their treatment; and the arrival of the new British minister to Bulgaria, Anthony Lambert, who has presented his credentials to the vice-president of the Praesidium of the Bulgarian National Assembly, Nikolai Georgiyev.
