Northern (N): Bulgaria (NG). Claim Against HMG by National of Bulgaria for Loss of Personal Effects

1958

A file containing documents relating to a claim by a Bulgarian citizen against the British government for compensation. The Bulgarian's claim was related to the loss of his luggage during his transfer to internment during the Second World War. The file contains the Bulgarian note verbale which points out that the claim was not covered by the 1955 settlement agreement between the two countries and was therefore outstanding. Foreign Office minutes agree that the claim was outstanding and that it was not covered by the 1955 agreement, but discuss whether the claim had been waived by the Bulgarian government by their signing of the Bulgarian Peace Treaty in 1947. Documents show that the War Office agreed with the Foreign Office analysis, and the British legation in Sofia is therefore asked to reply to the Bulgarian government stating that the matter was for them to resolve.
