A file containing documents relating to the shipbuilding industry in Bulgaria. Documents in the file include a translation of a Bulgarian press article about the industry, and analysis of the industry by the British minister in Bulgaria. The analysis states that whilst most Bulgarian industry acted as a drain on the Eastern-bloc economy, shipbuilding was an area in which that economy benefitted from Bulgaria. It notes that the industry had greatly increased its capacity since 1950; that further shipyards were under construction; that one of these contained ship-lifting equipment which would make it unique on the Danube; and that the majority of the ships went to the Soviet Union. The despatch also notes that the information about the industry was prepared using published Bulgarian statistics, and therefore could not be independently verified.
