Northern (N): Czechoslovakia (NC). Trades Union and Labour Situation

1958

A file of correspondence, reports, and press material concerning employment in Czechoslovakia. The documents contain a report produced by the Foreign Office suggesting that, during the last year, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia has "shown signs of wishing to re-adopt a tougher line against the workers", which is linked to the stated aim of the Soviet Union to "surpass Western per capita production within the foreseeable future". The report also states that the discontent and apathy of the Czechoslovak workforce has provoked the Czechoslovak government into adopting "severer methods of discipline on the labour front", and that "the Czechoslovak working class may be facing shortly a new 'time of troubles'". Other documents include a report produced by the British embassy in Prague covering the seventh Plenary Session of the Czechoslovak Central Trades Union Council; and an article in the Czechoslovak press on the role of trade unions in Czechoslovak politics.
