Northern (N): Czechoslovakia (NC). Civil Aviation

1958

A file of correspondence concerning aviation in Czechoslovakia. Subjects covered in the file include the demands of the Czechoslovak authorities who are seeking compensation from the United States following an air crash which killed twenty-two passengers. The compensation claim concerns the allegation that the plane collided with an American leaflet-carrying balloon as it came in to land at Poprad, East Czechoslovakia. The file contains the notes exchanged by the two governments and includes the arguments of American officials, who cite poor weather conditions as being responsible for events. Further correspondence includes a request for air clearance for a Czechoslovak "Super Aero" plane which is flying to London for a demonstration at the Air Registration Board; and the arrangements for a group of Czechoslovak officials who are coming to the United Kingdom to study airport design and construction.
