Western (W): Germany (WG). Currency Controls in East Berlin

1957

A file of correspondence containing a note of protest from the Allied Kommandatura in Berlin to the Soviet Commandant. The note protests against the imposition of currency controls at Berlin border crossings by the East German police, which resulted in West German citizens being subject to heavy fines or having their cars confiscated for alleged currency offences. The file contains the Soviet Commandant's reply stating that the matter lay within the competence of the East German government, and that the controls were intended to prevent black market activities in East Berlin.
