Western (W): Germany (WG). Annual Review for 1956

1957

A file containing an annual report and farewell despatch written by the British ambassador to West Germany, Frederick Hoyer Millar. The despatch discusses the improbability of any progress towards German reunification in the near future; the possibility that the West German chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, might be defeated in the 1957 election; and the political difficulties of the West German government making any move towards accepting the Oder-Neisse frontier between Germany and Poland while millions of refugees from east of the border lived in Germany. The file also notes the British policy of tying West Germany as closely to as possible to Western Europe and the United States, to prevent any danger of a repeat of the situation leading up to the Second World War.
