A file containing a series of weekly reports covering events in Berlin and East Germany between July and December 1957. The reports discuss the death of Otto Suhr, the former mayor of West Berlin; the election of Willy Brandt as Suhr's successor; and the proclamation of the 1957 Berlin Declaration by the foreign ministers of West Germany, France, Britain, and America, calling for the peaceful reunification of Germany. The reports also cover a plenum of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany; a visit to East Berlin by Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader; the diplomatic recognition of East Germany by Yugoslavia; and the transition of the East German workforce to a 45-hour working week. Other documents include two reports produced by the office of the British General Officer Commanding in West Berlin that collectively cover political developments in East Germany between April and September 1957.
