Northern (N): General (N). Distribution of Compensation to Claimants against Governments of Countries of Eastern Europe

1957

A file of correspondence, reports, and legal material concerning compensation claims raised by the British government on behalf of British citizens whose land and property in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania was nationalised or expropriated in the aftermath of the communist seizure of power in these countries. The documents contain a report produced by the Foreign Compensation Commission on the recovery of compensation payments from the Bulgarian, Hungarian, and Romanian governments, covering the role of the Foreign Office in the negotiations for compensation; the process of distributing recovered British assets from Bulgaria and Hungary; and the "large claims" raised by British oil companies against the Romanian government regarding the nationalisation of British-owned oil fields. Other documents include a list of compensation claims raised by recently-naturalised British citizens against the Hungarian government; and a discussion of compensation claims raised by the government of Luxembourg against the Soviet satellite states.
