A file of correspondence and press material concerning cultural relations with the Soviet Union. The documents discuss the difficulties that would be encountered in sending a British theatre company to the Soviet Union to perform a Shakespeare play; the potential benefits of such a visit, which would "reveal to the ordinary Soviet citizen the existence of a culture other than his own"; and a recent visit by a French theatre company to Moscow. The documents also contain a report in the Soviet press on the nature of Soviet cultural relations with other countries; a discussion by the British Russia Committee regarding the potential establishment of a new Anglo-Soviet cultural society, with the aim of "keeping out the Communists and fellow travellers"; and a copy of an article in the British press by Christopher Mayhew, a Labour M.P., which heavily criticises the current Anglo-Soviet cultural institutions for being excessively pro-communist.
